The TV anime Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, based on Volume 1 to the early part of Volume 6 of the original novel, aired from October to December 2018 on TOKYO MX and other networks. The animation was produced by “CloverWorks,” a new brand of A-1 Pictures, known for Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. With a talented staff including director Soichi Masui and series composition/script by Masahiro Yokotani, the anime beautifully portrays delicate emotions and storytelling. Set in the seaside city of Fujisawa, it delivers a touching and emotionally resonant story.

② Movie Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl

Sakuta Azusagawa, a second-year high school student living in the seaside city of Fujisawa, enjoys his everyday life with his girlfriend, senior student Mai Sakurajima. However, his life changes drastically with the appearance of Shoko Makinohara, his first love. For some reason, two versions of Shoko exist—one as a middle schooler and one as an adult. Sakuta ends up living with the adult Shoko, which complicates his relationship with Mai. Meanwhile, it is revealed that the younger Shoko is suffering from a serious illness, causing Sakuta’s old wounds to ache again.
The animated film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl, based on Volumes 6 and 7 of the original novel, was released on June 15, 2019, distributed by Aniplex across 31 theaters nationwide. Due to its unexpected popularity, movie goods quickly sold out from the release date, with additional stock gradually released from early July. The film’s screening expanded nationwide from July to September, eventually reaching a total of 95 theaters. The final screening ended on October 17, with a total box office revenue of 510 million yen.

③ Movie Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out

Sakuta Azusagawa, now in the third term of his second year of high school, has only a short time left to spend school life with his girlfriend Mai Sakurajima, a third-year student. Meanwhile, his younger sister Kaede, who has long preferred staying at home, reveals her true feelings for the first time: “I want to go to the same high school as you, big brother.”
For Kaede, this is a major decision. Even knowing how difficult it is, Sakuta gently supports her choice. This is a story about the feelings entrusted from “Kaede” to “Kaede” and the future they step into together.
The movie Sister Venturing Out was initially released in 104 theaters nationwide and recorded approximately 175 million yen in box office revenue within the first three days, surpassing the previous film Dreaming Girl. It ranked 4th overall in audience numbers during the same period and was the top Japanese film. On August 4, it surpassed 500 million yen in revenue, exceeding Dreaming Girl, and it was announced that screenings would expand further from August to October.

④ Movie Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid

It is now March, with only one month left in the school term. Sakuta Azusagawa attends his girlfriend Mai Sakurajima’s graduation ceremony. While waiting for Mai at Shichirigahama Beach, a mysterious elementary school girl who looks exactly like Mai from her child actor days appears before him. “Mister, who are you?” As Sakuta reflects on this strange experience, he receives a call from his father. “It’s about your mother—she wants to see Kaede.”
Their mother, who had been hospitalized for a long time after being unable to cope with what happened to Kaede, expresses her wish to see her. Sakuta decides to meet her together with Kaede, but cannot hide his nervousness about the long-awaited reunion. Meanwhile, unfamiliar scars appear on Sakuta’s body—could this be a sign of a new Adolescence Syndrome?
The movie Knapsack Kid was released in 103 theaters nationwide and recorded approximately 163 million yen in box office revenue within the first three days. It surpassed the attendance of Sister Venturing Out during the same period and ranked No.1 among new releases and 4th overall.

⑤ TV Anime Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus

The latest installment of the popular youth fantasy series Rascal Does Not Dream, titled Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, has been announced to begin airing as a TV anime in July 2025. This long-awaited installment enters the “college arc,” depicting a new chapter in Sakuta Azusagawa’s story.
The story follows Sakuta and Mai Sakurajima as they begin a new life after graduating from high school and entering university. Sakuta attends a university in Kanazawa-Hakkei while continuing his relationship with the popular actress Mai.
Then, a mysterious girl dressed as an out-of-season mini-skirt Santa appears, triggering another strange case of “Adolescence Syndrome.” In this college arc, Sakuta once again faces complex phenomena while deepening his emotional growth and bonds with others.
