At Kenchoji Temple, “VIE presents ZEN NIGHT Kamakura” will be held from Thursday, October 29 to Sunday, December 6, 2026!

This special event offers a completely different way to experience the temple from a daytime visit, featuring a sea of clouds over the garden, illuminated temple buildings, and music echoing throughout the grounds.

“ZEN NIGHT Kamakura” is a special nighttime viewing event held at Kenchoji Temple, where visitors can enjoy immersive performances combining sound, light, and a sea of clouds!

Visitors can experience a different side of Kenchoji Temple after dark, including a sea of clouds spreading across the Hojo Garden, illuminated temple buildings, and a stroll through the grounds surrounded by music. A reservation-only “Brainwave Zazen Meditation” experience is also available with a dedicated ticket.

※The nighttime event has different admission fees and opening hours from regular temple visits.

According to the organizers, the event features a sea of clouds in the Hojo Garden, wind chimes along the path leading to the Sanmon Gate, the “Cloud Dragon” painting in the Hatto Hall, and a special lighting display at the Karamon Gate. Visitors can enjoy the temple buildings and garden from a variety of perspectives while exploring the grounds.

Please note that on October 30, October 31, and November 1, the Hatto Hall will be open for viewing after 18:30. If you plan to visit on one of these three days, be sure to take this timing into account when planning your visit!

※The timing of autumn foliage depends on weather conditions, and peak colors are not guaranteed throughout the entire event period.

Standard adult advance tickets are priced ¥500 lower than same-day tickets.

“Brainwave Zazen Meditation” Requires a Dedicated Advance Reservation

The zazen meditation experience, during which participants’ brainwaves are measured, is available by advance reservation only, with a maximum of 12 participants per session. Visitors must purchase a special ticket that includes the experience rather than a standard admission ticket.

Five reservation slots are available every 30 minutes from 17:30 to 19:30.

If you would like to participate, deciding on your meditation session first will make it easier to plan the rest of your sightseeing and dining schedule for the day!

Same-day tickets are also scheduled to be sold at the ZEN NIGHT reception desk at Kenchoji Temple from 17:00 to 19:30 on event days.

According to the official Kenchoji Temple website, access information is as follows.

  • From Kita-Kamakura Station: Approx. 15 minutes on foot, or about 5 minutes by bus to “Kenchoji”
  • From Kamakura Station: Approx. 30 minutes on foot, or about 10 minutes by bus to “Kenchoji”

One point to keep in mind is parking. Kenchoji Temple’s regular dedicated parking lot is listed as being open from 8:30 to 16:30. Since availability during the nighttime event may differ, using public transportation may be the easier option when planning your visit.

What Is Kenchoji Temple?

Kenchoji Temple is the head temple of the Rinzai Zen Kenchoji School, located in Yamanouchi, Kamakura, and is ranked first among the Kamakura Gozan, or Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura.

Founded in 1253, the fifth regent of the Kamakura Shogunate, Hojo Tokiyori, invited the Chinese Zen monk Rankei Doryu to Japan to establish the temple. It became Japan’s first full-scale Zen training monastery and has played an important role in supporting the development of Zen culture in Japan.

The temple grounds are home to historic structures such as the Sanmon Gate, Butsuden Hall, and Hatto Hall, as well as beautiful gardens.
