What Is the “Hydrangea Path” at Kamakura’s Hasedera Temple?

Hasedera Temple, located in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a popular sightseeing destination known as the “Temple of Flowers.” During the rainy season, the temple’s famous “Hydrangea Path” becomes filled with around 2,500 hydrangea plants from approximately 40 different varieties, making it one of Kamakura’s most breathtaking scenic spots.

The colorful hydrangeas covering the hillside together with the stunning view overlooking Yuigahama Beach perfectly capture the beauty of early summer in Kamakura.

Along with visiting Hasedera Temple, it’s also highly recommended to enjoy exploring the Hase area, riding the Enoden train, visiting Yuigahama Beach, and discovering Kamakura’s gourmet food scene!

Best Viewing Season: Late May to Late June!

According to the official Hasedera Temple website, the hydrangeas are typically best viewed from late May to late June each year. The flowers often reach peak bloom around mid-June, and on weekends the temple can become so crowded that long waiting lines form.

For this reason, a timed-entry reservation system has been introduced in recent years as part of the temple’s crowd-control measures.
