What is the Kamakura Daibutsu?

The Kamakura Daibutsu, also known as the principal image of Kotoku-in, is a highly revered Buddhist statue in Japan. Located in a temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, this outdoor Buddha statue is officially designated as a National Treasure of Japan. The bronze Amitabha Buddha statue is about 11.3 meters (37 feet) tall and weighs approximately 121 tons.

Though smaller than the famous Great Buddha of Todai-ji in Nara, the Kamakura Daibutsu has retained most of its original form since its construction. It holds significant historical and artistic value in Japan’s Buddhist art heritage.

A Brief History:

According to “Azuma Kagami,” the official historical record of the Hojo regency, construction began in 1252 (Kencho 4th year). It is believed that funds for its construction were raised through donations by a monk named Joko. However, much about its origin remains unclear, including the identity of its original sculptor.

A Global Symbol of Buddhism:

Now over 750 years old, the Kamakura Daibutsu serves as a symbol of Buddhism’s eastward expansion. It attracts numerous devotees and tourists from around the world, regardless of religious affiliation.
